What gets me about that article is that the best story the guy could come up with is that he was on his way to visit his mother. I don't think we really wanted to know that at a time like that, his mother was the first thing that popped into his head.
I didn't get memes until recently, when in fact, Bildo tagged me. I decided what the heck, I'd go ahead and do one, and have been hooked ever since. IMO, the reason people enjoy them is it immediately provides a semi-structured feel of community to the blogs we all wander around. You can compare other people's answers to your own, follow the chain backward or forward to see how people are connected, and immediately have something of relevance to all of you to chat about.
