No RP-PVE servers is really lame.

Yah I don't think there is a lot of logic behind them having no RP-PVE. To me this is pretty significant because it shows that Funcom has no idea what people actually want. In the past RP players have leaned much more towards PVE then PVP. I think looking at the success of the WoW RP servers in the Battlegroup situation gives a good look your average RP'rs preference in server type.

The significants of not knowing? Well if they don't know a little thing like this which seems very obvious to me and most of the people I have spoken too, what else? This seems like evidence that they are going to do what they think is good over what people actually want. I am not a big advocate of pleasing everyone, I mean that makes for a watered down non-specific game. But this isn't really a game changing choice, seems like a big fat marketing error.

Bildo I'm having a meeting tonight to see which PVE server my guild is going to end up on, I'll let you know what we choose. =)

Actually, I've got to disagree with you both here on one level.

Polls since the game's official forums went up showed a very small interest in RP PvE servers. They actually are going by what their customers were telling them.

Now, what would have made sense is simply making a "recommended" RP-PvE server like they did for the Oceanic guys.

That would help.

Oh well, even LotRO launched without an official RP server. Eventually Landroval wound up the server of choice for that I think. Wiccana is already headed to be the one for AoC in the US too.

Keep in mind, these are the early access servers. If demand is high, there will likely be additional servers maybe even on launch day. That's what WoW did, and then for a long time ~3 new servers each week. Even so they didn't catch up to demand for months.

The word still isn't final over RP-PvE servers. Even though the forum polls have had RP-PvP really high, Funcom seems to be on a wait and see with their rather conservative starting servers.

Its true that their poll suggested that but not everyone takes part in the poll and/or forums. Its more then likely that out of the first 500k subscribers or what not at least 5 -1 0k would join an RP-PVE. Unless of course they aren't expecting many initial subs.

At any rate I am not into RP so I am going with a "normal" server. The FFA PVP server style has always seemed like a pseudo PVP server as it was always the answer to giving PVP in older MMO's that weren't built for it.

What would really be cool is implementing something into the "Normal" PVE servers that functions like the Order/Chaos did back in Ultima Online. Then people can choose whether or not they want to participate in World PVP without having to worry about everyone and their dog waiting for a gank on them.

What I would have really liked to see was Pacific US servers. Or at very least recommending servers for Pacific/Central/Eastern so the population generally has more co-ordinated schedules. Not to mention the higher pings having to connect to the east coast.

Yeah I really wanted a Pacific server too. From Vancouver, I know my network traffic will travel south first, then east.

We had our meeting tonight and decided to go with "Set".

Now here's hoping the game doesn't suck =)

I am gonna have to follow along on the sidelines for a bit to see what you guys think when the game goes live. The beta convinced me that at this point, I don't want to shell out the money for this game from what I was able to experience.

I'll be following AoC daily via my blog. This isn't just a blatant advert, just if you're interested I'd say check in a few weeks time.

Overall I don't think there's going to be a consensus over this game. It's niche, so it will appeal to different people.

There's also the fact that for many, they're just playing AoC until WAR comes out, which I'd say gives a different perspective.

mmorog,

The thing is, I am a HUGE fan of the Conan universe. For me not to play speaks to how badly the beta affected me. The same thing can be said for LOTRO. I started out day one on that game because I am an even bigger fan of LOTR than Conan. I stopped playing after a couple of months because I didn't like the game play. Fast forward several months (almost a year) to now and I am back playing it because I think they made significant strides.

Well.. I've been nuts about Tolkien since I was a kid and that's exactly why I just couldn't play much LOTRO. It just doesn't work for me to play a game within Middle Earth.

I don't think Turbine has done a bad job per se, it was a bit of a hoot at first, but overall-- it left a bad impression on me, just because that's a world I'd rather read than play. I'm not the only one that feels this way, I've heard it from other Tolkien fans too.

Whereas Conan, I admit I hated the movies and only had read a smattering of the comics until about a year ago. Now, after reading the Robert E. Howard stories, it strikes me as a lot more suitable to the MMORPG genre. It's more open-ended, there isn't a big "the whole world will change" event looming on the horizon. And even as Conan becomes the king, it feels like the world is bigger than the events in the stories rather than the other way around.

Getting back to the point, I can roleplay in that! Carve out my own story, so to speak. I haven't seriously RP'd since UO, so it's going to be one hell of a kick for me to do that again.
